Why Cornwall's Coast is a Rock Pooler's Dream

Cornwall's coastline is a patchwork of granite, slate and serpentine, scoured by Atlantic swells and revealed twice daily by the tide. Nowhere else in the UK offers such a variety of shallow pools, from the rugged north coast to the sheltered south. The best rock pooling happens in gullies and crevices that stay wet but calm, where anemones, crabs and small fish take refuge. Timing Your Visit: Tides and Shelter

Kynance Cove on the Lizard is legendary for its serpentine rock, which forms weird and wonderful pools. At low tide, the exposed reefs hold colourful seaweeds, snakelocks anemones and even the occasional sea urchin. Hannafore Beach at Looe is different: a broad, flat rocky shore that is easy to explore and great for families. The pools here are shallow and warm in summer, with hermit crabs, shore crabs and blennies. Both spots reward a slow, careful search, and both are best at low tide with calm conditions.

Rock Pool Etiquette and Enjoying Your Day

The creatures you find are surviving in a tough environment. Leave them undisturbed: turn stones back exactly as you found them, and never prise animals off rocks. Use your hands or a soft net, and return everything to the pool gently. If you lift a rock, put it back the same way up. Avoid chasing fish or poking anemones. Take only photographs and memories. If you find something unusual, observe it quietly and then let it be. Cornwall's rock pools are a fragile nursery for marine life, and your care keeps them that way.
